Oracle Updates Entire Family of Oracle Berkeley DB Embeddable Databases

Continues Commitment to Open Source

Oracle announced new releases of Oracle Berkeley DB, Oracle Berkeley DB XML and Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition. The new releases and enhancements signify Oracle's commitment to continued innovation across the Oracle Berkeley DB product family, while maintaining the open source dual license business model.

In addition, Oracle has certified all three members of the Berkeley DB family with Oracle VM, providing customers and partners the benefit of server virtualization.

With the growing number of applications and devices that are deployed at the edge of the data center and beyond, a key requirement is the ability to run in a lights out, always on environment. Oracle Berkeley DB helps fill this need with a proven, open source, embeddable database engine which developers at ISVs, OEMs and enterprises can integrate directly into their software applications, devices, and equipment to deliver high performance, reliability and availability with virtually no human administration.

As a result, the Oracle Berkeley DB family of products has continued to gain greater community support from both open source and private source developers.

"JasperSoft is pleased to announce the integration of the JasperSoft Business Intelligence Suite with all three Oracle Berkeley DB products. Developers can now leverage the combined benefits of Berkeley DB and JasperSoft's advanced reporting and BI capabilities for their applications," said Nick Halsey, vice president of marketing at JasperSoft."

"Oracle is committed to continued development, enhancement and support for the Oracle Berkeley DB product family, while maintaining the same open source dual license business model that it has always used," said Rex Wang, vice president Embedded Systems Marketing, Oracle. "The Oracle Berkeley DB product family continues to enjoy tremendous community support which has helped shape Oracle's most recent innovations across the product line."

Designed for Performance

All three members of the Oracle Berkeley DB family are:

  • Designed for high performance, reliability and embeddability within applications that have predictable data access patterns and therefore do not require a query language like SQL. For these applications, SQL is often unnecessary and may slow the overall performance.
  • Software libraries directly linked into the application, eliminating the performance penalty of client-server architectures.
  • Designed to run in a completely unattended fashion, so all runtime administration is programmatically controlled by the application, not by a human administrator.

The new releases of each product include:

  • Oracle Berkeley DB Release 4.7: Improved caching efficiency, faster database recovery, a cycling master feature for replicated (HA) environments, support for the Java Direct Persistence Layer (DPL) API, and QNX RTOS support.
  • Oracle Berkeley DB XML Release 2.4: Support for XQuery update, cost-based query optimization for significantly improved performance and XQilla for XQuery processing.
  • Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition Release 3.3: Improved scalability, caching improvements, more efficient in-memory and on disk storage, support for Google Android and Apache Maven.
